AI Referral Traffic: How Plano Small Businesses Can See Visitors From ChatGPT and Perplexity

Customers are asking ChatGPT and Perplexity for local recommendations, and some of them click through to websites. But most small business owners have no idea whether any of those visitors are theirs. Here's how to find them in Google Analytics in about ten minutes, and how to read what you see.

AI referral traffic means visitors who reach your website by clicking a link inside an AI tool like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Claude. More of your customers are using those tools to find local businesses. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that use of ChatGPT and other AI tools for local recommendations rose from 6 percent to 45 percent in a single year. This guide from Web Designer Plano shows you how to see whether any of those people are landing on your site, and what to do with the numbers.

Why AI Referral Traffic Is Worth Watching

For most websites, AI tools still send a small slice of total visitors. Here's what the larger studies show:

  • According to a LovedBy.ai roundup of 2026 studies, AI referrals made up about 0.28 percent of site traffic across 74,752 websites in Ahrefs data (March 2026), and about 0.33 percent across 101,574 websites in SE Ranking data (April 2026).
  • Previsible's 2026 AI Traffic Report, which analyzed 166 Google Analytics properties from November 2024 through May 2026, found ChatGPT accounted for 92 percent of AI referral traffic. In its small and midsize business group, AI's share of traffic grew from 0.4 percent to 1.71 percent.

So the numbers are small but growing, and they tend to be people who already got a recommendation. That makes each visit worth understanding.

How to Find AI Referral Traffic in Google Analytics 4

Good news: this got much easier this year. According to Google's "What's new in Google Analytics" page, on May 13, 2026 Google added a dedicated way to measure traffic from popular AI assistants. Visits from recognized assistants now appear in an "AI Assistant" channel automatically, with no setup.

To see it:

  1. Log in to Google Analytics 4 and open your website's property.
  2. Go to Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition.
  3. Look for AI Assistant in the list of channels (next to Organic Search, Direct, Referral, and so on).
  4. To see which tool sent each visit, change the table's dimension to Session source / medium. You'll see entries like chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai.
  5. Set the date range to at least the last 90 days so you have enough data to spot a pattern.

Also check the Landing page report filtered to that channel. It tells you which of your pages AI tools are actually recommending.

What AI Referral Traffic Reports Won't Show You

Treat the AI Assistant number as a minimum, not a complete count. A few gaps to know about:

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Clicks from Google's own AI answers arrive looking like regular Google organic traffic, per the LovedBy.ai roundup above. Google Search Console is the better place to watch those. Our Google AI Overviews guide explains more.
  • App visits without a referrer. Some taps from AI mobile apps show up as "Direct" because the app doesn't pass along where the visitor came from.
  • People who never click. Someone might read ChatGPT's answer, then search your business name or call you directly. That influence won't appear as AI traffic at all.

One helpful detail: OpenAI's publisher FAQ says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, which makes ChatGPT visits easier for analytics tools to label.

Optional: Build Your Own AI Channel

If you want more control, Google's help page on custom channel groups explains how to create your own "AI assistants" channel using a pattern that matches sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Claude, and Perplexity. Google says to place that channel above "Referrals" in the list so the visits are counted correctly.

For most small businesses, the built-in channel is enough. If you do build a custom one, make sure you aren't counting the same visits twice.

Turn the Numbers Into Action

Once a month, take five minutes to check:

  1. Is AI referral traffic growing? Compare this month to the last three.
  2. Which pages get it? If AI tools keep sending people to one service page, make that page excellent: clear pricing ranges, a strong call to action, and a tap-to-call phone number.
  3. Are those visitors contacting you? If you track form submissions or calls as conversions in Google Analytics, compare how the AI Assistant channel performs against Organic Search.
  4. Which pages get none? Important pages with zero AI visits may need clearer, question-and-answer content. Our guide on getting cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity covers how.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to set anything up to see AI referral traffic?

Not if you already use Google Analytics 4. Since May 13, 2026, GA4 groups visits from recognized AI assistants into an AI Assistant channel automatically. You just need GA4 installed on your site.

Why is my AI referral traffic zero?

It may simply be small, or AI tools may not be recommending your pages yet. Some visits also land in Direct or Organic Search. Check a longer date range, and make sure your site isn't blocking AI search crawlers in its robots.txt file.

Does Google AI Overviews traffic count as AI referral traffic?

Not in Google Analytics. Clicks from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode show up as regular Google organic visits, so they're mixed in with your normal search traffic.

Is AI referral traffic more valuable than regular search traffic?

Several 2026 studies suggest it converts well, but their results vary a lot. The best answer is your own data: track conversions and compare channels on your site.
